1) GENERAL: The terms mentioned in the regulations listed below, refer to specific conditions: 1) Athletes to competitors, i.e. those legally registered and participating in the race 2) organization to the Organizing Committee of Zagori Mountain Running 3) Race Committee to the Organizing Committee authorized for the fair and safe conduct of the races.

2) COMPLIANCE: Regulations shall be binding in their entirety and directly applicable to all participants. Athletes are requested to respect the instructions of the race judges. Non-compliance with regulations or instructions always carries the penalty of exclusion. The race judges when aware of breaches of regulations, record them and inform the offenders. Any other person authorized by the ZMR Committee has the ability to also record any infringement and to submit it for consideration to the Race Committee.

3) REGISTRATION, FEES, and PAYMENT:You can find information regarding registrations, costs and procedures by clicking here. Refunds are not allowed for any reason after the May 15, 2019 but you are eligible for a 50% refund if you cancel before that date.

4) BENEFITS: The race fee includes:

  1. For all participants:
    1. Bib numbers
    2. Food supplies and liquids
    3. Time racing services
    4. Medical care
    5. The Plus pack also includes the official t- shirt of the race and a keepsake gift.
  2. For those who complete the race in time:
    1. Finisher Medal

Expenses related to transferring an injured athlete will not be covered if the injury was caused by the athlete’s negligence

5) RACE DATE: Zagori Mountain Running takes place the last weekend of July. The schedule is as follows: TeRA 80km: Saturday at 04.30, Marathon +44km: Saturday at 06.00, Half Marathon 21km: Sunday at 08.00 and Entry Race 10km: Sunday at 09.00

6) RACE ROUTE: The circuit of the races follows, primarily, paths that are well maintained and marked. Additional temporary signaling is placed just few days before the races, so that the paths are as clear as possible

7) PARTICIPANTS – TIME LIMITS: The race of 80km has a time limit of 20 hours with intermediate cut off points at the following Refreshment Stations: “Stomiou Monastery” on the 23km (5 hrs from the designated start time), “Papigo Main Support Station” on the 44km (9hrs and 30min after the designated start time), “Monodendri” (14hrs and 30min after the designated start time) and “Kipi” (16hrs and 30min after the designated start time). The Marathon +44km is officially concluded within 10hrs after the designated start time. There is an intermediate elimination point at the “Papigo Main Support Station” (4hrs and 30min after the designated start time).

Finally, for someone to be considered a valid finisher, they should be within the time-frames listed above, regardless of age and gender. Those athletes, who finish late, will be presented in the official results as “DNF”. The final race classification will be provided by the official timing services company, not to be in dispute.

In any case and for whatever reason, duplicate medals will not be given to athletes finishing together. In case of dispute, the final ranking will be certified with the help of the photo finish camera. It should be clarified that the “net time” provided by the timing company is not a classification criterion. The absolute classification criterion is the passage from the imaginary finish line.

8) ATHLETE’S NUMBER: Each athlete is obliged to have their race number (bib) on them, on the front of their shirt. The number must remain throughout the race unfolded, so that the logos and data on it should be visible. Substantial alteration of the Bib, which may be confusing to the Station officials, will be punished by exclusion. Loss of the Bib will also be punished by exclusion. Participants can only get their BIB themselves, using their Passport or ID card. A third party legally authorized can receive the BIB.

IMPORTANT:
After completing the registration process, each athlete will get a confirmation email with the Participation Certificate attached in PDF form. On the certificate, the following are indicated:
a. The athlete’s full name
b. The race they have chosen
c. Their BiB number.On the date of the race, each athlete must have this certificate in hand (printed or in digital form, along with his/her credentials (ID, Passport, etc) in order to receive their BiB tag and tracking chip.

In case you lose your certificate, you can address to the ZMR Committee to re-send the certificate no later than 48 hours before the race.

9) ROUTE SIGNAGE: The route signage (km indications, direction and guiding signs) placed by the ZMR Committee is temporary, in order to aid the athletes and it is removed after the race. The trails and paths are sufficiently marked and well maintained, so that the athletes do not run the risk of losing the way.

10) EXTERNAL ASSISTANCE: External assistance is allowed to athletes from people who are present at the Refreshment Stations.

Anyone may escort the athletes even without a Bib number, on the condition they do not provide any kind of assistance or stand in the way of other athletes. However, family and friends can join the athletes in the last meters to the finishing line.

11) ASSISTING TOOLS: The use of walking poles is allowed. Possession and use of map, compass, GPS, mobile phone or radio (VHF) are also permitted.

12) ENVIRONMENTAL CARE: All athletes are requested to mark their bib number on every food package (energy gels, nutrition bars, etc) they carry with them. The ZMR Committee will proceed to random sample tests on athletes, in order to guarantee that all athletes adhere to the above regulation. In case an empty food package is thrown by an athlete during the race, the ZMR Committee has the right to disqualify them from the present ZMR and any other future event. For your information this rule will be strictly and firmly applied. In every Refreshment Station waste bags will be available

13) MOVEMENT IN PATH: Athletes are required to move along the path without forming groups by preventing athletes who would like to overtake. Athletes are requested to stand aside and should remain on the uphill (inner) side of the slope. Athletes who (according to at least 3 official testimonies) block the path and prevent overtaking will be excluded. Dogs are not allowed to accompany the athletes.

Equipment regulations for the TeRA 80km race. The list of the following mandatory items: 1) aluminum blanket 2) Headlamp and batteries 3) First Aid Kit (hemostatic spray, bandages) 4) mobile phone. Every athlete has the right to carry on the equipment they consider as necessary to cope with the difficulties of the race. The ZMR reserves the right to carry out random checks to guarantee that the athletes are properly equipped. The ZMR will assist athletes with the transportation and delivery of their Bags (drop-bag) to the Main Support Station “Papigo” and at the finishing line. Athletes are requested to hand in their bags to the Admin desk one day before the race. The Organizers recommend a minimum of equipment, called “Survival Equipment” which is the minimum equipment necessary for an athlete to cope with the difficulties of a race that can last up to 22 hours. The suggested survival equipment list consists of the following materials: 1. Waterproof jacket 2. Aluminum blanket 3. Headlamp + batteries 4. Liquid cup (of the athlete’s choice), at least 500ml 5. Pharmacy (hemostatic spray, elastic bandages) 6. Mobile phone. In the above equipment, each athlete can add essential medicines and other practical objects, like leggings, Nordic walking sticks, sun hat, gloves, electrolytes, etc. The Organization, in case of accident, has the right to check the obligatory equipment of the athlete. If it is found lacking equipment, the athlete may be disqualified due to gross negligence.

As gross negligence cases can be considered: a) injury from falling due to headlamp absence in the dark, b) hypothermia due to lack of clothing, c) dehydration due to lack of hydration bottles.

DROP BAG: Every athlete has the right to deliver one (1) “supply bag” (drop bag-the official ZMR bag), which they will receive at the Papigo Main Support Station. However the athletes of the TeRA 80km race are entitled to carry a personal second bag (preferably of waterproof material) with all the necessary equipment for the race (food, clothing, etc). Please do take into consideration that sharp objects (knives, forks, etc) are prohibited to avoid damage to other stored materials and bags.

The ZMR undertakes the responsibility to transfer the drop bags to the Papigo Main Support Station. Once the athletes pass from this point, the drop bags will be carried to the finishing line, so that the athletes can collect them there. The ZMR is not responsible for any damage to the stored materials in the drop bag. A special tag bringing on the athlete’s BIB number will be given to the athletes, in order to place it on the bag itself. 

TERA 80km & Marathon+ 44km athletes must delivered their drop bags shortly before the start of the race (Tsepelovo High School). 

14) REFRESHMENT POINTS: The ZMR provides special catering for the athletes, supporting them in many intermediate points of the route. The Main Refreshment and Support Stations offer a variety of dietary options, while the Secondary Support Stations offer the required minimum refreshment options. 15) MANDATORY EQUIPMENT, BAGS: No compulsory equipment is required except for the TeRA 80km race (q.v. regulations TeRA). It is recommended however to carry a small backpack or waist bag, with some basic supplies, glasses, hat, bag or a suitable water bottle, food items of their choice to meet their needs at intermediate stations. Each athlete is responsible for the selection of the pot (cup, pot, bag, bottle, water bottle, etc.) they bring, so that pots have sufficient capacity of liquids to hold. The quantities of liquid will be served with a dispenser. For practical and time-saving reasons, the containers should have a wide mouth for quick filling. Athletes should be aware to carry one or two containers for their liquid supplies separately (water and isotonic mix). The water backpacks or waist packs are generally permitted. Each athlete is responsible for their backpacks. The ZMR will hand out, together with the BIB numbers, backpack tags for each athlete, who wish to deliver their personal items to the ZMR and pick them up at the end of the race (finishing points Tsepelovo and Kipi)

16. SHORTCUTTING: Shortcutting is prohibited and athletes face disqualification penalties. Each participant has the responsibility and obligation to pay attention to the warning signs in certain parts of the area. In the alpine part, alternative paths and turns are allowed to help the runners, in order to avoid damaged trail routes that might carry risks or lead nowhere.

17. CHECK POINTS: Check Points are compulsory for all athletes. All Refreshment and Support Stations are also Check Points. BIB numbers should be visible by the judges, so that they can record them. If an athlete wears a windproof jacket on top of the Bib, they should remove it when reaching the Check Point. Refusal of Bib demonstration equals to disqualification. Athletes who fail to present themselves at a Check Point, are not considered valid and face disqualification.

18. OBJECTIONS: Objections, for whatever reason, are raised only by the athlete themselves at the latest 30 minutes after the finish. The decision of the Objection Committee, composed of the Race Director, members of the Executive Committee and the Station Admin Staff in the responsibility zone of which, the event occurred, is issued no later than the time of the ceremony awards and it is final.

19. SAFETY: The Race Commission undertakes the responsibility to supervise race route for safety reasons, to provide medical care and help to athletes who might be in need. In cases where security personnel and Admin Staff indicate a change of direction for safety reasons, athletes are obliged to obey. Refusal to comply will result in disqualification. At the Main Support Station specialized medical personnel will provide the appropriate treatment to the athletes. If the race doctor decides that an athlete is not able to continue, then the athlete is required to hand over their Bib.

20. ROUTE MODIFICATION / POSTPONEMENT: If necessary (extremely hazardous weather conditions), the Organizers reserve the right to modify the route or to postpone the race for a short time in order to avoid unpleasant situations putting in danger the participants. A race can however be postponed indefinitely if there are extreme weather conditions prevailing in the region.

21. RESULTS: The Race Timing Services Company will need some time to elaborate the data and proceed to the official (final) announcement of the race results. Once this procedure is completed, participation certificates will be available

22) PENALTIES: Offenses and regulation violations lead to disqualification in the following situations: 1) route pollution, 2) shortcuts, 3) inappropriate behavior towards the ZMR Staff 4) loss of Bib and any other inappropriate behavior. Lifelong exclusion is possible for severe cases, such as violence against members of the ZMR Committee, or deliberate extreme shortening of the route.

23) PRIZES – CATEGORIES: The Organizing Committee has established the following categorization awards for all athletes.

For the TeRA 80km and Marathon+ 44km races, the following categories exist:

Ι) Overall Awards Category
ΙΙ) Male athletes aged 50-59
ΙΙΙ) Male athletes aged 60+
ΙV) Female athletes
V) Female athletes aged 50-59
VI) Female athletes aged 60+.

For the Half Marathon 21km and Entry Race 10km races, the following categories exist:

Ι) Overall Awards Category,
ΙΙ) Male athletes aged 40-49
ΙΙΙ) Male athletes aged 50-59
ΙV) Male athletes aged 60+
V) Female athletes
VI) Female athletes aged 40-49
VII) Female athletes aged 50-59
VIII) Female athletes aged 60+

For the Marathon+ 44km, Half Marathon 21km and Entry Race 10km races, there is a special categorie:
Juniors up to 21years old

  1. All categories require the presence of at least 6 athletes in order to be considered valid. In any other case, the athletes fall in to the prior or closest matching category.
    IMPORTANT NOTICE: The “Overall Awards Category” is addressed to athletes of all genders and ages. Athletes will be awarded separately if they rank first in their respective categories.
    AWARDS: For the TeRA 80km race awards will be presented to:  the first 6 finishers regardless of age and gender, the first 3 female athletes and the first 3 from the above listed age groups. For the rest of the races, awards will be presented to: the first 3 finishers from the overall category, the first 3 female athletes and the first 3 winners from the above listed age groups.
    IMPORTANT NOTICE: The award-winning athletes who will not be present during the ceremony will not receive their prize.

24) COPYRIGHT: The ZMR and its partners retain the copyright of photographing and filming the race. Each athlete by submitting the application form, automatically accepts this term, knowing that their personal data can be displayed in photos or videos. It is also important to notice that compensation claims for any publication of the material will be rejected.

25) PRIVACY: The ZMR has the moral obligation to protect the privacy of the athletes and the data submitted by the application form, according to the information privacy law in force. Only the name, age and city of residence are allowed to be announced.

26) DISCLAIMER: The ZMR Committee shall not be liable for death, injury or any health damage of the participants, who by submitting the application form, declare the following:

  1. They are aware of the risks that might occur in a demanding mountainous race
  2. They confirm that they are healthy and fit to take part in the race, having been recently examined by a doctor. Athletes are obliged to go through regular medical screening and physical examination. Therefore, medical certificates will be required. The ZMR Committee bears no responsibility for the injury of athletes who choose to ignore the warnings in certain parts of the route, running the risk of falling with unpleasant or fatal outcome. The ZMR Committee declines any financial responsibility in case an athlete makes use of external assistance.

27) AMENDMENT OF REGULATIONS: The ZMR reserves the right to amend the regulations of the races, without prior notice.

28) CANCELLATION OF A PARTICIPATION: The race’ss checker as well as the medical staff of the race reserve the right to stop / cancel the athletes of those whom they feel they are no longer able to complete the race.
